So let me just tell you how absolutely phenomenal the My Chemical Romance / Green Day show was on 4/20/05 (Charlotte, NC)! You can't even imagine! Let's start with My Chemical Romance who was so bad-ass words can't even describe but I'll try (or if you don't care, feel free to scroll down to the pictures)!
As for the guys themselves, Gerard has an unbelievably magnetic stage presence that makes it nearly impossible to take your eyes off him. And he really knows how to get the crowd going. Frank has this crazy kid-like energy...he was hysterical to watch! Not many guitarists can play while laying on the ground with their feet up in the air but Frank can!! He's a show in itself! Ray is also an amazing guitarist and although he plays while standing upright, he still really gets into the music as does Bob who is a fantastic drummer! As for Mikey, he tends to hide behind the rest of the band but don't let that fool you - he knows how to play the Hell of out the bass and jump up and down like the rest of them!
As for the concert itself, they actually played quite a few songs but the set still seemed to end way too soon. Every song was played with such energetic enthusiasm that is rarely seen in bands today! They actually seem to enjoy performing for people and that really makes a difference. I talked to several people there that don't even listen to MCR that fell in love with them right there so if all their shows are as good as this one, I'm sure they made a lot of new fans on tour! Anyway, they opened with Helena which is as far as my memory goes with the order of the songs. They also played (in no particular order) Give 'Em Hell Kid (which they lovingly dedicated to Green Day), You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison, I'm Not OK, Ghost of You, Thank You for the Venom, Cemetary Drive, and Honey this Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us.
I didn't get to take any pictures of them on-stage because I had a security guard up my ass knowing I had a camera. But I did get to meet Frank and Gerard (not sure where the others were hiding!!) after the show let me just tell you that they are two of the sweetest guys I ever met. Frank was eagerly giving out hugs and chatting while signing autographs and Gerard, although he seemed a little distracted, was equally friendly and careful not to miss anyone looking to have something signed. It's just really nice to see a band that makes an attempt to connect with their fans like that. They will never know how much that means to us! I wish I had gotten to meet Mikey, Ray, and Bob too but I guess they were a little shy! So for now I'll have to walk around with an MCR shirt signed by only 2 of the band members! But anyway, I managed to snap a few pictures of them which was way harder than I thought it would be because there was either people in the way or they were right in my face (hence the fact some of these are a little too close up)!! Sadly enough, I couldn't take any WITH them as there was a barrier up but here they are:
Frank Iero (left) and Gerard Way (right) of My Chemical Romance, graciously signing autographs for their adoring fans

Frank and Gerard again...in the middle of a sentence (yes, they talk to you while signing autographs!)
And one more of Frank which unfortunately concludes my MCR pics way sooner that I would have liked! :-( But this is what you get when you tell him to "smile pretty"!
Now, on to Green Day! I feel really bad for them for having to follow such a great performance by My Chemical Romance! Its so hard to compete with that! LOL. They were awesome though. I would definitely go see them again. Bille Joe also has an awesome stage presence and he really knows how to work a crowd. Its not often you see someone that influencial...no matter what he asked the crowd to do, they did it. It was unbelievable! And Tre Cool had to have thrown about 50 drumsticks over his head during the course of the show. I wonder who collects all of them and what do they do with them? As for Mike Dirnt, he is a great bass player. Definitely has almost as much energy as BIllie Joe if you can believe that.
As for the show itself, it started off which a drunken bunny (or rather a guy in a pink bunny suit and a beer bottle in each hand) stumbling around and doing the "YMCA". I must say it was extremely amusing! Then the lights went out and the theme song from 2001 Spave Odyssey came on. Purple lights lit the stage as 3 guys ran up a ramp onto the stage as fast as any Olympic runner. It was a great way to start the show...those were 3 guys (plus their session guitarist) that were ecstatic to be performing. They played a great mix of new and old stuff and they actually sounded a lot better live than I thought they would. They blasted through a ton of songs of which I don't know the order but to the best of my recollection they played American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia (which was easily the highlight of the set), Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting, St. Jimmy, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Longview, Basket Case (the other highlight), She, Brain Stew, Jaded, Hitchin' a Ride, King for a Day (which he donned a really cute crown and velvet robe for), and the cover of Operation Ivy's "Knowledge" (where as usual they got some audience members onstage to play the song making me ask myself why I never learned to play guitar!!!). At some point they also managed to throw in their own little rendition of the Isley Brother's "Shout" and Queen's "We Are the Champions". Then they encored with Maria and Good Riddance. Luckily things were a lot more chaotic during Green Day so I managed to sneak in a few pictures of them onstage while the security guard wasn't babysitting me. Wish I had some of Tre Cool but he was just too far away! So here they are:

This would be Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day (like you didn't know!)

More Billie Joe

And more Billie Joe...the pic on the right was during Hitchin' a Ride where he moaned and fondled himself (yeah baby)!!!
And the last of the Billie joe pics as he soaks up the audiences applause!!!!!
And this is Mike Dirnt, Green Day's bassist
